Hammamet Holidays
Set between the Mediterranean and the Sahara desert, Hammamet, once a sleepy fishing village, is now Tunisia's most popular tourist resort. Known as 'the garden resort', Hammamet is lined with olive and citrus groves. Visitors can while away the hours on Hammamet Beach with its fine sand and selection of water sports. Nearby beaches include Yasmine beach and Iberostar Phenicia. The latter is surrounded by 14 hectares of gardens.
Those who want a break from sun bathing can try their hand at a wealth of water sports, enjoy dolphin-watching, camel rides or unwind with a Hammam (an Arabic bath). Hammamet old town is a maze of narrow streets lined with bustling shops, cafes and restaurants. Hammamet's rich history is displayed through its statues, mosaics, museums and architecture. Points of interest include the medina with its Arabic architecture, the 15th-century citadel with its Roman ruins, and the bustling souk market of nearby Nabeul.
Hammamet is also renowned as Tunisa's centre of pottery, so expect to find plenty of pottery workshops displaying local art. Shopping in Hammamet makes for a memorable experience - visitors can haggle for carpets, jewellery, embroidery, leather goods and just about everything one could imagine. Nightlife in Hammamet is based around the hotels, which host shows and discos.
