Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen Holidays
'The fastest growing town in Mexico', Playa del Carmen is the capital of the Riviera Maya. Holidays in Playa del Carmen combine pristine white-sand beaches, luxury hotels complexes, chic boutiques, lively bars, and the obligatory Mayan ruins. The nearby archaeological wonders of Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza date back to the 7th and 8th centuries. The well restored Chichen Itza was once a centre of Mayan civilisation and attracts thousands of visitors every year.
Playa del Carmen is renown for its mile upon mile of beautiful sandy beaches. The long stretch of powder white sand making up Coco Beach is particularly popular with sunbathers. Playa Tucan is dotted with sun beds and features wind surfing, jet skiing, boat trips and fishing expeditions. There is also a selection of quieter beaches to the north. Those who fancy a break from sun bathing can take the ferry to Cozumel Island, which boasts a breathtaking array of coral reefs. Needless to say diving and snorkelling come highly recommended.
Visitors can browse the traditional handicrafts and souvenirs in the selection of shops near the beach. Open-air cafes and designer shops line Quinta Avenue. Playa del Carmen offers a wide selection of restaurants serving traditional Mexican dishes as well as international favourites. Many bars and restaurants often have live music - the traditional Mexican mariachi band is a regular feature. Discos are also popular and stay open until the early hours.
