Over two million tourists flock to Cancun every year. Holidays in Cancun combine tropical beaches, action-packed adventures, unrivalled scuba diving, and magnificent Mayan ruins. Cancun is divided into two very different areas: Zona Hotelera (Cancun Island), is a 12-mile long island featuring beautiful beaches, glitzy hotels and American-style shopping malls; and Ciudad Cancun (Cancun City), is situated on the mainland and offers a more traditional Mexican feel.

Cancun boasts a fine selection of beaches packed with powdery white sands and lapped by crystal clear waters. The magnificent corals, shallow reefs and abundance of marine life make Cancun a world-class destination for scuba diving and snorkelling. Other attractions include deep-sea fishing, swimming with dolphins, boat cruises, jungle tours, and a selection of spectacular golf courses. The Mayan marvels of Tulum, Chichen Itza and Coba are the three main archaeological attractions in the area. A number of tour operators run trips to these sites, alternatively cars are readily available for hire.

Cancun offers an abundance of hotels, shops, bars, restaurants and nightlife. Many of the hotels in Zona Hotelera cater solely for package tourists, but those seeking cheaper accommodation should explore Ciudad Cancun. Restaurants offer everything from fast-food joints to fine eateries. Evenings can be spent relaxing over drinks in chilled-out beach bars, piano bars, street bars with mariachi bands, and dancing into the early hours at the huge nightclubs.
