Chora Holidays
The traditional 18th-century village of Chora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the capital of Patmos. Holidays in Chora centre round its 12th-century monastery, narrow streets, and spectacular architecture. The fortified Monastery of Saint John the Theologian overlooks the town from its hilltop location. Visitors can while away the hours strolling round the cobbled stone streets and charming chapels.
Grand mansions, dating back to the 16th and 17th-centuries, are juxtaposed against the typical Aegean style whitewashed houses. Holidays in Chora also feature a selection of small shops, bars, cafes and traditional Greek tavernas and restaurants. Evenings in Chora are spent drinking with the locals and tucking into traditional Greek dishes. The town is also linked to surrounding beaches and villages via regular bus routes.
Chora is particularly popular during Easter, when hundreds of people descend on the town to watch as the Monastery of St John hosts an impressive re-enactment of Jesus' last days, including the washing of the disciples' feet and a spectacular parade. Holidays in Chora offer popular excursions to the cave of the Apocalypse, the Monastery of the Annunciation, the churches of Agios Fokas and Agia Ekaterini, and the castle of Agios Ioannis.
