Cofresi Holidays
Named after Captain Roberto Cofresi, the infamous Puerto Rican pirate, the resort of Cofresi is one of the Dominican's quieter holiday destinations. Originally a small fishing village, Cofresi is known for its sweeping dark-sand beaches fringed with palm trees and dotted with sun beds and umbrellas. Many enjoy water sports, such as windsurfing, scuba diving and sailing.
Cofresi offers a small selection of shops selling souvenirs and local handicrafts, as well as a cluster of bars and restaurants. A couple of the hotels have discos. Those seeking more choice can head to the neighbouring resort of Puerto Plata, six miles along the coast. Cofresi boasts an ample selection of lodgings - particularly popular are the luxury mountainside villas and all-inclusive beach resorts.
Those who want to explore further a field can enjoy the scenic drive along the Moca Moutnain Route, passing beautiful panoramic countryside and Dominican villages. Alternatively, visitors can take a boat ride along the Islabon and Yasica rivers. Family excursions include the Ocean World Adventure Park, which is home to the world's largest dolphin lagoon. Here you can swim with dolphins and even interact with sharks! Another popular outing is the glass-bottom boat tour across the clear waters of Sosua Bay.
